Non-default adpositional encoding of possession

The goal of this talk is to discuss the insights into the nature of possession that can be provided by two rarely considered phenomena: possession exceptionally encoded as location (e.g., bij mij in de auto, lit., "by me in the car", in Dutch, but also Russian and Romanian) and the caritive relation encoded by verbs like lack and the prepositions like without. I will show that the former provides strong evidence against treating possession as a unified notion whereas the latter suggests the treatment of possession as valency change in the possessum noun (cf. Vikner and Jensen 2002). I will discuss the arising tension and potential ways of resolving it.
